The Expansion of Facebook in Seattle

Published in Blog

Originally headquartered in Menlo Park, California, Mark Zuckerberg decided to establish new satellite offices in Seattle in order to keep on expanding and growing the number one social network in the world.

Some of the engineers working for Facebook have moved to their Seattle office as early as 2010. Through the years, Seattle has become synonymous with coffee and Amazon, the world’s largest online retail company. Facebook chose Seattle because of its primary location and the steady growth of tech companies building their headquarters in the city.

When the first group of employees from Facebook moved to Seattle in 2010, there were only a dozen of them. Through the years, the social networking website decided to hire more people to become an official part of the team. Their office in Seattle grew at an incredible pace, and by 2016, the satellite office boasts more than a thousand employees. However, it did not stop there as more talented people are getting hired by Facebook’s office in Seattle. By 2018, the number of people rose to more than two thousand people. This uncontrollable growth of Facebook in Seattle prompted the company to buy new spaces where they can place their employees. One of the latest offices that Facebook will be leasing would be a small building located in the South Lake Union neighborhood.

Before the employees transferred, they used to occupy an area at the Westlake, which is about 150,000 square feet in area. This space can accommodate up to a thousand people, but when more talents joined the company, this floor space became smaller and it is not enough to hold that much people in the same place. To combat the overpopulation scenario inside the office, Facebook decided to lease some of the buildings around the South Lake Union. This neighborhood is one of the top destinations in Seattle today, and this is where the top IT and tech companies are headquartered. Amazon helped out in renovating the area, making it a world-class IT park for companies who wanted to lease office buildings.

More companies are transferring to the South Lake Union, most of them being involved in the IT and tech industry. Mark Zuckerberg knew that the South Lake Union would someday become an important tech hub, and his decision to build an office in Amazon’s home turf would make the tech industry healthier because of the growth of competition. Amazon is known for their online retail business structure, wherein customers will be browsing the item that they wanted online, make a purchase, and wait for its delivery. Through effective digital marketing and digital advertising techniques, online retail companies like Amazon experienced an impressive growth rate.

Facebook, on the other hand, stated that they will also be leading a massive overhaul of their Marketplace feature. Facebook is also entering the retail industry, and he will be showing his competitors how he plays the game when it comes to retail. Most of the people who are using Facebook Marketplace are relying on the information provided by the poster, and transactions are usually informal. This time, Facebook is really serious in improving their features, and they will be doing it to keep their distinction as the number one social networking website in the world. Even though Facebook Seattle keeps on increasing in population, the main headquarters in Menlo Park still serves as an important hub for learning and trying new methods in promoting the business, like the digital marketing and digital advertising techniques.

For now, the engineers are the ones required to transfer to Seattle because there are lots of projects that they need to work on. The projects that the company is doing would become more visible in the future.

Google to Put Ads in Several New Spots This Year

Published in Blog

Google recently announced its plans to foster greater ad interaction for its advertisers. These changes will be rolling out over the course of this year.

If you use any Google products or services (which is most of us), you will soon start seeing more ads across Google’s platforms. Let’s take a look at what’s in the works.

Discovery Ads

Google’s algorithms for displaying relevant content to its users continue to improve. The Discover feed allows users to browse current news stories and articles related to their interests. The articles shown to users are based both on their internet browsing history and topics they’ve selected as interesting to them.

Advertisers will be able to pay for ad spots that will show up in the Discover feed as users scroll through stories. They will be identified by an “Ad” badge that will distinguish them from articles. Ads shown to users will be relevant to their interests and chosen based on similar algorithms for displaying stories.

Discovery ads will show up on the Google app on iOS and Android, the Discovery feed to the left of Android’s home screen, the YouTube homepage, Gmail’s Promotions and Social tab, and on the mobile Google.com site. They will not be shown on the desktop version of Google.com as of yet.

Gallery Ads

Images have begun appearing more frequently on the top of Google search results. For example, when you search for a movie, a gallery of actor pictures shows up near the top of the search. Visuals offer the potential to attract more attention than text, and as such, Google is taking advantage of visuals for advertisements in the form of Gallery ads.

These types of ads are designed to create more user interaction with advertisements. In Gallery ads, users can scroll through four to eight images related to the same advertisement. Each picture has space for a description of up to 70 characters.

Advertisers will pay Google for these ads per each click generated. A “click” is counted if either a user clicks through to the advertiser’s site or swipes to the third image in the gallery.

Gallery ads will appear on top of mobile search results.

Google Shopping

Google Shopping has included advertisements for non-branded searches since 2016. These ads include an image that can be expanded to reveal more products sold by the advertiser, as well as merchant information. They feature a badge that identifies them as a sponsored result.

In the coming year, Google Shopping ads will not be limited only to a Google Shopping search. These ads will appear on the Discover Feed, the YouTube Feed and Google Images.

Google Shopping will also be redesigned to incorporate Google Express. As users browse products, they will be able to make purchases on merchant’s sites, in stores, or buy directly on Google while Google handles the transactions.

For merchants that are already a part of Shopping Actions, they will be automatically opted-in to the program. Shopping Actions is available on Google.com and through Google Assistant. Later this year, it will be extended to YouTube and Google Images.

Through this process, Google expects to be able to offer a streamlined consumer experience with simplified returns and better customer service.

Seattle Named Best City for Dog Lovers!

Published in Blog

It’s not difficult to see that pets have become a big deal. They follow us around the house, join us on our walks and even act as our “fur children”. But will people go as far to find a city that is dog-friendly when moving to a new place?

Research has shown that this is exactly the case. Some states have even advertised themselves as being more appealing to dog owners than others. In the United States, Seattle has been known to climb the ranks as the top dog city.

Who Proved This?

In order to accurately test which city in the United States is the most dog-friendly, there had to be scientific data. Rover, a network shared between dog walkers and pet sitters, teamed up with the real estate brokerage named Redfin. Together, they studied 14,000 cities found within the United States.

Rover focused its attention on creating a “Walk score”, which measures how easy it is to get Fido out and about. Redfin also looked for how many people used the keyword “dog” when searching through online home listings. Those areas with the desired keyword were more apt to be a dog-friendly neighborhood that had nearby dog parks.

Which City Came Out as the Top Dog?

Using a number of models, Rover and Redfin compared the 14,000 U.S. cities against each other. The number one dog-friendly state turned out to be Seattle with a Walk Score of 73 with 2 percent of home renters searching for the keyword “dog”. The next cities in line were Chicago, Denver, Manhattan and Washington, D.C.

Interestingly enough, Rover also looked into the most popular breed for the areas that were studied. Seattle’s top breed was the Labrador Retriever, whereas other top cities included mixed breeds and the French bulldog.

Just How Dog-Friendly is Seattle?

According to a census conducted in the year 2013, dogs are more popular than children. With more dogs than babies, it’s no wonder that this state quickly became the top dog when compared against other cities within the United States. Back in 2013, 25.2 percent of households had dogs whereas children only made up 19.7 percent.

What Makes Seattle Ideal for Dog Owners?

There are a number of reasons as to why Seattle was placed number one in regards to its ability to meet the needs of dogs and their owners. Below are a few found from Seattle dog owners.
• Off-leash dog parks: There are over a dozen off-leash areas for your dogs, some of which offer a scenic view and plenty of acreages.
• Dog-friendly restaurants: It’s rare to find a dining area that lets you bring your pet inside, but Seattle has plenty of restaurants and bars that are fitted for Fido.
• Hiking with your dog: Whether you prefer a large city park or an expansive National Park trail, Seattle offers plenty of outdoor fun.
• Dog on the bus: If you have a civilized pup, you can even take them along when traveling via bus.
• Water fun: Want to take a boat tour or rent a paddleboard, why not take your dog with you? Seattle welcomes aquatic adventures.
• Doggy hotels: This city also welcomes outsiders with dog-friendly hotels.
• Dog shopping experiences: Being able to take your pet with you while you go shopping for their new bed is convenient.
• Dog daycare: Seattle has plenty of options for those who can’t take their dog to work.

Through the data provided by Rover and Redfin, Seattle was ranked as the most dog-friendly city in the United States. This is largely due to the number of resources available for pet owners such as hiking opportunities, dog-friendly restaurants and doggy daycare. Who wouldn’t want to take their dog with them to shop? In Seattle, this is made possible.

Tips for Avoiding Spoilers to Avengers: Endgame

Published in Blog

With So Many People Posting Spoilers About Avengers: Endgame, We Wanted to Share Some Tips on How To Prevent Someone from Ruining Your Enjoyment of the Film.

Marvel Studios long awaited "Avengers: Endgame" opens in the US this weekend. While the studio is doing everything it can to keep the plot of the movie a secret, so as not to spoil filmgoers' enjoyment of it, that does not mean that there will not be spoilers out there. But there are things you can do to avoid them. Especially since the movie had an unbelievable $350 million opening in the US, and $1.2 BILLION world wide, there are sure to be some spoilers on social media.

The directors of "Avengers: Endgame" — Joe and Anthony Russo — are doing their best to keep people from ruining the ending of the film. They have put out a pair of tags on social media to prevent spoilers: #ThanosDemandsYourSilence and #DontSpoilTheEndgame. But being people are still people, there is a good chance that spoilers may get out there.

Here are some ways to prevent them from spoiling your enjoyment of the film:

The best way to avoid spoilers, of course, is to avoid going online until you see the film. Unfortunately, this is not practical for most of us. But you can avoid searching for the film on either Google or YouTube as well as on social media. Though even if do not actually search for the film on social media, spoilers could still appear in your news feeds. But there are ways you can prevent this on each of the major platforms.

Twitter

Twitter gives its users multiple ways of preventing spoilers. First of all, you can mute those that are known to release spoilers. But even better, the platform provides a way for you to mute certain keywords, such as "Avengers: Endgame." To do this, simply follow these instructions:

Go to "Settings and privacy."
Click on "Content Preferences."
Select "Muted" from the Safety tab.
Click "Muted words" and then "Add."
Type the keyword(s) that you would like to mute.

You can further specify for how long you want to mute the keywords, whom you would like to mute and where on Twitter you would like to mute the keywords.

Facebook

Currently, Facebook has no option for muting keywords, but there is still something you can do to prevent spoilers from showing up there. You can snooze posts from certain people or pages that you follow. This will prevent their posts from showing up in your news feed. To do this, simply click on the 3-dot menu that appears in the top-right corner of a post and snooze posts from this account for the next 30 days.

Instagram

Instagram also does not have an option to mute keywords. But it will allow you to mute specific accounts. Like on Facebook, you do this by clicking the 3-dot button that appears in the top-right corner of a post and muting that account. Unlike Facebook, though, this does not mute the account for a specific period of time. You will have to manually unmute the accounts after you have seen the film.

You may further also want to avoid reading reviews of the film as well, as too often many of them reveal plot points that are best kept under wraps until you see the film.
